Lejo van der Heiden is Head of the Public Health Care Unit within the Department of Public Health of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, the Netherlands. His responsibilities include overall public health strategy, public health infrastructure, national screening programs, prevention of chronic diseases and intersectoral health policies. Earlier he wrote the Ministry’s vision on prevention: ‘Being healthy, staying healthy’ (2007). In his present position he is also responsible for design and set up of the Dutch National Programme on prevention “All about health….”
From 2001- 2006 he worked at the International Affairs Department of the Ministry of Health, where he was responsible for global health affairs and acted as liaison person for WHO. Before joining the Ministry of Health he was for a long period active in development cooperation, working for the Dutch Ministry of Development Cooperation and the European Union (amongst others in Botswana and Nepal), specialising in strategic planning, nature conservation and integrated rural development, including health and sanitation. He studied human geography at the University of Utrecht (the Netherlands).
