Lejo van der Heiden

Head of the Public Health Care Unit, Department of Public Health of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, Netherlands.

Lejo van der Heiden is Head of the Public Health Care Unit within the Department of Public Health of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, the Netherlands. His responsibilities include overall public health strategy, public health infrastructure, national screening programs, prevention of chronic diseases and intersectoral health policies. Earlier he wrote the Ministry’s vision on prevention: ‘Being healthy, staying healthy’ (2007). In his present position he is also responsible for design and set up of  the Dutch National Programme on prevention “All about health….”

From 2001- 2006 he worked at the International Affairs Department of the Ministry of Health, where he was responsible for global health affairs and acted as liaison person for WHO.  Before joining the Ministry of Health he was for a long period active in development cooperation, working for the Dutch Ministry of Development Cooperation and the European Union (amongst others in Botswana and Nepal), specialising in strategic planning, nature conservation and integrated rural development, including health and sanitation.  He studied human geography at the University of Utrecht (the Netherlands).

René Kural

Director of Centre for Sports and Architecture, PhD, Associate Professor, Architect MAA, The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts

Associate Professor, PhD, Architect MAA René Kural is director of the Centre for Sports and Architecture as well as independent practising architect with his firm René Kural Architects. Since 1996, René Kural has been involved in research, communication, counselling and development of Danish and foreign municipalities, architectural firms, government agencies and foundations.

René Kural is the author of eight books. He has also contributed a large number of articles and feature articles on body culture, urban planning, urban space, landscape and architecture for Danish and international magazines. He recently served as visiting professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology and (ToKoDai) and Tokyo University of Science (TUS). René Kural is the Danish member of the Union International des Architectes (UIA) Sports and Leisure Group. In 2013, winner of the Olympic Committee (IOC / IAKS) bronze for Herning Football Exploratorium in collaboration with GBH Landscape Architects, and the same year recipient of the President’s Award, Tokyo University of Science.

Ed Mayo

Secretary General of Co-operatives UK

Ed Mayo is Secretary General of Co-operatives UK, the trade body that campaigns for co-operation and works to promote, develop and unite co-operative enterprises. He is a long-term co-operator with a track record of innovation and impact in his work to bring together economic life and social justice.

As Chief Executive of the National Consumer Council (UK), he was instrumental in mergers leading to the creation of Consumer Focus, the statutory consumer champion, in 2008. Ed rose to prominence as director of the New Economics Foundation, Chaired the Jubilee 2000 campaign and was part of the team that founded the Fairtrade Mark.

The Independent described Ed as “the most authoritative voice in the UK speaking up for consumers”, while the Guardian nominated him as one of the top 100 most influential figures in British social policy.

Drs. Ellis Koster

Marketeer at JOGG

Drs. Ellis Koster has been working in diverse marketing functions since 1998. In this period she has been responsible for multiple marketing- and communication projects and she has directed and monitored marketresearch andshopper-insights in several countries. At the moment she is marketeer at JOGG (meaning: “Youth on Healthy Weight”), where she is responsible for the development, coordination and  implementation of the DrinkWater and GratisBewegen campaigns. Ellis has studied Business Administration at the University of Groningen and followed several courses in direct marketing, digital marketing, database marketing and strategic CRM. 

Professor Ken Peattie

Professor of Marketing and Strategy at Cardiff Business School

Ken Peattie is Professor of Marketing and Strategy at Cardiff Business School and for over eleven years was also Director of the Economic and Social Research Council funded BRASS Research Centre which specialised in research into business sustainability and corporate social responsibility. He is currently Co-Director of Cardiff’s Sustainable Places Research Institute. His personal research interests focus on the impact of sustainability concerns on marketing and corporate strategy making; social marketing for sustainable lifestyles; social enterprise and education for sustainability. He has published three books and numerous book chapters and journal papers on these topics including contributions to California Management Review, Journal of Business Research, Journal of Marketing Management, and Public Policy and Marketing.  His most recent book, co-authored with Professor Frank-Martin Belz, entitled “Sustainability Marketing: A Global Perspective”, won the 2011 German Academic Association for Business Research ‘Business Book of the Year’ award. He has also been extensively involved in providing expert advice to a range of UK organisations, particularly on the role of social marketing in promoting sustainable lifestyles, including acting as an Expert Advisor to the Welsh Government’s Sustainable Living Framework.

Irina Dinca, MD, PhD

Senior Expert, Public Health Capacity and Communication at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC)

Dr Irina Dinca is a Senior Expert, Public Health Capacity and Communication at the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Being as background a public health physician, with a PhD in public health, she has more than 20 year experience in health communication, health promotion and health policy. Her current focus is on communicable diseases such as: vaccine preventable diseases (VPD), HIV/AIDS/STIs, and Tuberculosis and on youth and under-served population groups. Previously, Dr Dinca worked in non-communicable diseases areas such as tobacco, and healthy lifestyles. She coordinated health promotion activities in Romania, including health promoting schools project, and worked for John Snow, Inc. on a large-scale program on sexual and reproductive health (SRH). She set up a non-governmental organization (NGO) in 1991 on delivering SRH education for young people using peer education – “Youth for Youth Foundation”. She served as a Member of the Board of Trustees in International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE).

Professor Dr. Arie Dijkstra

Netherlands

Professor Dr. Arie Dijkstra is a Health Scientists and expert in the field of psychological change, behaviour change, and behaviour change strategies. He studies the fundamental processes in controlled laboratory setting, and he develops complex interventions that are tested in the field. For example, he developed and tested innovative interventions to promote physical activity, smoking cessation, tranquillizer addiction, medical adherence, quality of life, and a large scale community intervention to promote physical activity and healthy eating. After his PhD at Maastricht University, he received a fellowship of the Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences at Leiden University, and he was a VIDI-laureate at the University of Groningen. He publishes in the top-ranked Health Psychology journal and supervises several PhD students.

L. Suzanne Suggs, PhD, MS, CHES

Associate Professor of Social Marketing, Head, BeCHANGE Research Group, Institute for Public Communication (ICP), Faculty of Communication Sciences, University of Lugano, Switzerland

L. Suzanne Suggs is Associate Professor of Social Marketing and Head of the BeCHANGE Research Group in the Institute for Public Communication, Faculty of Communication Sciences, at the Università della Svizzera italiana in Lugano Switzerland. She is also Director of the USI Sustainability Incubator (USI-SINC). She received a BBA in Marketing at University of North Texas (USA), a MSc and PhD in Health Studies at Texas Woman’s University (USA), and a Post-doctoral fellowship focused on healthy ageing and clinical decision-making at McMaster University (Canada).

Suzanne’s research focuses on social and behavior change and information and communication technologies (ICTs). She examines the determinants of behavior (personal, cultural, policy and environmental), develops and tests the effects of communication strategies, delivered through ICT, on such behaviors.

Her work is published in some of the leading health communication, social marketing, e-health and health policy journals. She spoke at the World Economic Forum about smart choices in health communication and will lead a session and policy report on the topic of communicating complexity in health at the upcoming World Innovation Summit for Health in Qatar.

She is a Co-Founder and on the Executive Board of the European Social Marketing Association, on the Steering Committee of the Geneva Health Forum (2014), and is on the Editorial Board for the Journal of Health Communication. She teaches graduate level courses in Social Marketing, Focus Group Methods, Research Methods, and Media Skills at USI, Basel, Bern and Zurich.

Drs Julie Huibregtsen

Huibregtsen Sociale Marketing

Dr. Julie Huibregtsen has spent a lot of her professional time making social marketing more known and accessible in the Netherlands. Therefore she is very proud to welcome the second European Social Marketing Conference to her country, the Netherlands, in the city of Rotterdam, where it all started in 2008. As a ESMA member Julie has been working hard to make this event a great success.

As a Social marketing expert for the Netherlands, Julie Huibregtsen has extensive experience in social marketing and project management. She has strong national and international networks and supports Dutch organizations in the application of social marketing. Her mission is to help professionals with their behavioral goals: “…all professionals I advise face the same challenges; get through to their target audience effectively and having to ‘sell’ their products succesfully. Matthew Wood

Principal Lecturer in Marketing, University of Brighton, UK

Matthew is Principal Lecturer in Marketing at the University of Brighton where he is Head of the Marketing Subject Group and Course Leader for the Postgraduate Certificate in Social Marketing. He has an MBA, a Postgraduate Diploma in Law and a first degree in Sociology.

Matthew has extensive commercial market research experience and before academia was an account manager for TNS. He continues to work as a consultant, qualitative researcher and trainer. He is an associate of leading social marketing agencies The Campaign Company and Brilliant Futures.

Matthew was a founder member of the National Social Marketing Centre’s Academic Advisory Group and established Brighton University as the UK academic partner for the World Social Marketing Conference. He has presented papers and keynote speeches at leading marketing conferences and published work in Social Marketing Quarterly and the Journal of Social Marketing.

In 2013 Matthew received The Australian Association of Social Marketing’s inaugural award for the most impactful Journal of Social Marketing publication in the last two years for his paper “Marketing Social Marketing”.

Professor Jeff French

Conference Chair

Jeff French is a recognised global leader in the application of behaviour change and social marketing. Jeff has extensive experience of developing leading and evaluating behaviour change projects, social marketing programmes and the development of communication strategies at international, national, regional and local level.

With over 30 years experience at the interface between government, public, private and NGO sectors Jeff has a broad practical and theoretical understanding of national and international health and social development issues.

Jeff and has published over 70 chapters, articles and books in the fields of behaviour change, social marketing, community development, health promotion and communications. Jeff is a visiting professor at Brunel University and Brighton University and a Fellow at Kings College University London and teaches at four other Universities in the UK.

Jeff was the Director of Communication and Policy at the Health Development Agency for five years from 2000 – 2005. In March 2005 From July 2006 through to July 2009 Jeff set up and managed the National Social Marketing Centre for England. In August 2009 Jeff became the Chief Executive of Strategic Social Marketing Ltd.

Strategic Social Marketing works with clients from all over the world in the private, NGO and public sector on the development and evaluation of social behaviour change programmes. Strategic Social Marketing also provides consultancy services to some of the world’s biggest corporate communications and research companies.

Jeff continues to act as the principle adviser to the National Social Marketing Centre and the Department of Health behaviour Change and Social Marketing policy team. Jeff also acts as an advisor to a number of national policy committees, the EUCDC Knowledge and Resource Centre in Health Communication project, and is a member of the organising committee of the Global Social Marketer’s network. Jeff is a member of the editorial Boards of the International Review on Public and Nonprofit Marketing and the Journal of Social Marketing.

Jeff is Conference Chair of the World Social Marketing Conference, Sydney, 2015. His new book ‘Social Marketing and Public Health Theory and Practice’, published by Oxford University Press is now available. Jeff is also the author of the NSMC’s new guide to procuring and managing the delivery of social marketing service.

Christiane Lellig

Director, Stratagème / Executive Group Member, ESMA

Christiane Lellig has been working as a political communications and social marketing consultant in Switzerland and Germany since 1999. She has led national research programmes and behaviour change campaigns in various domains ranging from environmental concerns to labour and social justice issues. Her current work focusses on questions around society in transition, green economy, biodiversity, renewable energies and natural hazard prevention. Christiane holds a masters degree in Social Sciences from the University of Göttingen, Germany. She is director of “Stratagème. Agentur für Social Change”, a Zurich based consulting firm specializing in social marketing and sustainability communications. She is a member of the executive group of ESMA and the executive board of the International Social Marketing Association.
