As a leader in the region’s healthcare industry, Nisreen Qatamish was appointed in 2016 as Director General of the King Hussein Cancer Foundation (KHCF), the largest community-based organization in Jordan dedicated to combating cancer. In this role, she is responsible for overseeing KHCF’s fundraising and development efforts, driving global advocacy programs, raising public awareness on early detection and prevention, as well as cancer coverage and patient support. In addition to this role, Qatamish was appointed as Director of the Jordan Breast Cancer Program (JBCP) in 2008, where she is tasked with growing the Program to becoming a highly influential national initiative that plays a pivotal role in setting the country’s healthcare agenda and decreasing breast cancer morbidity and mortality rates. As JBCP’s Director, Qatamish devised and implemented a five-year strategy for fighting breast cancer through intensive local advocacy efforts, awareness campaigns, and community outreach programs. Qatamish’s experience is well recognized on both a national and regional level. Over the years, she has contributed to science through various publications including the National Breast Cancer Health Communication Strategy 2013-2016. She is also a prominent consultant and trainer in various sectors, with special focus on capacity building within the healthcare industry, advocacy and change management. Qatamish is further known as a leading promoter and advocate for gender equality, tobacco control, and cancer prevention and early detection.

Rafael Obregon

Rafael Obregon, Ph.D. is Chief of the Communication for Development Section, United Nations Children’s Fund, New York. Prior to joining UNICEF he was an Associate Professor in School of Media Arts & Studies, and Director of the Communication and Development Studies Program, Center for International Studies, at Ohio University. He has an extensive teaching, research and professional experience in development and health communication, and international development. He was an associate professor at the Department of Social Communication at Colombia’s Universidad del Norte (1997-2002), where he serves as an adjunct faculty.

He is a member of the review board of several journals, including the Journal of Health Communication, and serves as guest reviewer of Social Science Medicine, Health Policy Journal, and Biomedcentral. He is a member of several international associations including the International Communication Association and the Latin American Association of Communication Researchers. He has published numerous books, peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and technical reports, including the Handbook of Development Communication and Social Change, Wiley, 2014, and The Handbook of Global Health Communication (2012).

He earned a doctorate in Mass Communication, Pennsylvania State University, an M.A. in International Affairs, Ohio University; and a B.A. in Social Communication and Journalism, Universidad Autonoma, Colombia.

Elizabeth Fox

Elizabeth Fox is the Director of the Office of Health, Infectious Diseases and Nutrition at USAID.   Her Office is responsible for global leadership in maternal and child health, environmental health, nutrition, neglected tropical diseases and the prevention and mitigation of infectious diseases, including TB, malaria and emerging pandemic infections.

Dr. Fox has been with the Global Health Bureau of USAID for 18 years. Before joining USAID, she was the manager of strategic planning at the International Bureau of Broadcasting, formerly USIA.  She worked for the International Development Research Centre of Canada for ten years as the social sciences representative for Latin America, headquartered in Bogota, Colombia, and Buenos Aires, Argentina.  She worked in Paris between 1984 and 1989 as a consultant to UNESCO. She holds a PhD in International Relations, an MA in Communications, and a degree in journalism. In 1990 she held the first UNESCO chair in communication at the Universidad Autonoma de Barcelona.  She received an honorary doctorate from the Pontificia Universidad Catolica of Peru (2007).  She currently is adjunct faculty at the School of International Service of American University, and has published widely in the fields of communication and development.

Professor John Sterman

John D. Sterman is the Jay W. Forrester Professor of Management at the MIT Sloan School of Management and a Professor in the MIT Institute for Data, Systems, and Society. He is also the Director of the MIT System Dynamics Group and the MIT Sloan Sustainability Initiative.

Sterman’s research centers on improving decision-making in complex systems, including corporate strategy and operations, energy policy, public health, environmental sustainability, and climate change.It ranges from the dynamics of organizational change and the implementation of sustainable improvement programs to climate change and the implementation of policies to promote a sustainable world. His research also includes systems thinking and organizational learning, computer simulation of corporate strategy and public policy issues, and environmental sustainability. Sterman pioneered the development of “management flight simulators” of corporate and economic systems which are now used by corporations, universities, and governments around the world.

He is the author of many scholarly and popular articles on the challenges and opportunities facing organizations today, including the book, Modeling for Organizational Learning, and the award-winning textbook, Business Dynamics.

Sterman has been recognized for his work with an honorary doctorate from the Università della Svizzera italiana, Switzerland. He has twice been awarded the Jay W. Forrester Prize for the best published work in system dynamics; has won an IBM Faculty Award as well as the Accenture Award for the best paper of the year published in the California Management Review; has seven times won awards for teaching excellence; and was named one of MIT Sloan’s “Outstanding Faculty” by the BusinessWeek Guide to the Best Business Schools.  His research has been featured in media around the world including the New York Times, the Boston Globe,Public Television’s News Hour, National Public Radio’s Marketplace, WGBH, and other media for his innovative use of interactive simulations in management education and policymaking, particularly climate change and energy policy.

Sterman holds an AB in engineering and environmental systems from Dartmouth College and a PhD in system dynamics from MIT.

Jeff French is a recognised global leader in the application of behaviour change and social marketing. Jeff has extensive experience of developing leading and evaluating behaviour change projects, social marketing programmes and the development of communication strategies at international, national, regional and local level.

With over 30 years experience at the interface between government, public, private and NGO sectors Jeff has a broad practical and theoretical understanding of national and international health and social development issues.

Jeff and has published over 70 chapters, articles and books in the fields of behaviour change, social marketing, community development, health promotion and communications. Jeff is a visiting professor at Brunel University and Brighton University and a Fellow at Kings College University London and teaches at four other Universities in the UK.

Jeff was the Director of Communication and Policy at the Health Development Agency for five years from 2000 – 2005. In March 2005 From July 2006 through to July 2009 Jeff set up and managed the National Social Marketing Centre for England. In August 2009 Jeff became the Chief Executive of Strategic Social Marketing Ltd.

Strategic Social Marketing works with clients from all over the world in the private, NGO and public sector on the development and evaluation of social behaviour change programmes. Strategic Social Marketing also provides consultancy services to some of the world’s biggest corporate communications and research companies.

Jeff continues to act as the principle adviser to the National Social Marketing Centre and the Department of Health behaviour Change and Social Marketing policy team. Jeff also acts as an advisor to a number of national policy committees, the EUCDC Knowledge and Resource Centre in Health Communication project, and is a member of the organising committee of the Global Social Marketer’s network. Jeff is a member of the editorial Boards of the International Review on Public and Nonprofit Marketing and the Journal of Social Marketing.

Jeff is Conference Chair of the World Social Marketing Conference. His new book ‘Social Marketing and Public Health Theory and Practice’, published by Oxford University Press is now available. Jeff is also the author of the NSMC’s new guide to procuring and managing the delivery of social marketing service.

Jeff Jordan

Jeff is President and Executive Creative Director of Rescue Social Change Group, a behaviour change marketing company. His passion for social change began in high school when he volunteered for an anti-tobacco group. Observing the lack of effective social marketing services, he started Rescue Social Change Group when he was 17 years old. While growing Rescue SCG, Jeff studied Marketing for his undergraduate degree and received a Master’s in Experimental Psychology from the University of California, San Diego. Today, Jeff has led Rescue SCG’s growth to five offices in the US and managing over two dozen behaviour change programs across North America, tackling issues such as tobacco, obesity and violence.

Natalie Bowring MPH, is a current Masters of Research student in Social Marketing at Queensland University of Technology. Her topic area is sexual heath with a particular focus on the over 50’s consumer markets. Natalie has been involved in a number of behavior change and service design projects including blood donation, electricity usage and widening participation in education. Natalie draws upon both social marketing and health promotion and believes that interdisciplinary multi-skilled behavior change teams are the way of the future.

Nathaly’s passion for social change started in her childhood while observing social inequalities in Colombia. Rebekah is a Professor of Marketing at the QUT Business School, Queensland University of Technology Australia and has extensive experience in the use of games/mobile technology and services marketing to facilitate behaviour change.  Rebekah has collaborated with Brisbane City Council on a $6.5m mobile game program to change energy use in low-income earners, Queensland Catholic Education Commission to develop the GO:KA social marketing alcohol schools program, the Australian Red Cross Blood Service to identify key service factors that create barriers to redonation, the Australian Breastfeeding Association to develop MumBubConnect (world’s first two-way automated SMS support service) and Queensland Health in improving the service experience for cancer screening. Rebekah is also the immediate past-President of the Australian Association for Social Marketing (AASM). Rebekah holds a PhD in services marketing, has over 150 peer-reviewed publications and is the co-editor of the Journal of Services Marketing.

Lawrence Swiader has spent his career studying the intersection of technology, media, education, and how it can better people’s lives.  Currently, as Vice President of Digital Media at The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy he leads digital programs for teens and adults and oversees all aspects of The National Campaign’s digital presence with the goal of improving the reproductive health behaviors of people in the U.S. For ten years before that, he used technology as a tool to teach about the history of the Holocaust and to motivate people to act to end contemporary genocide.

Diogo Veríssimo explores the human side of biodiversity conservation by using social marketing tools to drive behavior change. He is currently a David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellow at Johns Hopkins University, where he works on topics as diverse as human-wildlife conflict, wildlife trade and coastal fisheries management, in countries like Nepal, Indonesia, Brazil, China and Mozambique. He has produced more than 60 academic papers and book chapters, and was, in 2016, recognized by the Commission for Education and Communication of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature with their Young Professional Award.

Tom is a leading social marketing and health communications practitioner, building on his 25+ year career with Ogilvy Public Relations where he served as founding Global Managing Director of the agency’s industry-leading social marketing practice.

Tom directed many of the agency’s largest government accounts, working over decades for such clients as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, and the U.S. Agency for International Development.  Tom and his teams supported the development of highly successful public education and engagement campaigns including CDC’s landmark “America Responds to AIDS” campaign and the pioneering “The Heart Truth/Red Dress” campaign for the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. Patrick Cook

Patrick Cook has more than 20 years of experience in leading and delivering communication, social marketing and training and technical assistance solutions. He has led large capacity-building and social marketing projects for US and Canadian government and for-profit corporations as well as delivered focused solutions for community based organizations and local agencies. Over the years, Patrick has designed, developed, and delivered dozens of training workshops, courses, and materials to help adults working at the community level be more effective communicators and social marketers. Drawing on his academic studies in rhetoric and composition and his 20-plus years working as a social marketer and trainer, Patrick’s workshops are designed to empower non-professional communicators benefit from and learn to implement the best practices of communication and social marketing professionals in their community-based work. Working together for more than 12 years, Patrick and Jean have designed and delivered a unique training curriculum and process that is easy-to-follow, adaptable, and scalable across multiple communication and behavior change challenges. Patrick is currently Senior Vice President at IQ Solutions, a digital health communications firm based in Washington, DC. Jean Synodinos has seventeen years of experience in health communication, social marketing, communication training and technical assistance, and advocacy. She provides data-driven, audience-focused, and realistic strategic communication support to clients that have included several divisions of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. She has conducted over 100 trainings on communication and social marketing to over 4,000 participants, and her reputation as an inspiring trainer has garnered invitations to present at conferences for the U.S. Department of Education, the National Dropout Prevention Center, state governm practices of social marketing and experiential adult learning. Her areas of greatest interest include strategic communication planning; effectively conveying evaluation data to audiences and stakeholders; social marketing; developing values-based messages; and, the application of research in behavioral economics to behavior change communication.

Niels has been involved in a number of projects in helping drive social change through technology from grassroots fundraising to consulting for the Meth Project, helping targeting audiences of at risk teenagers across 8 US states. Niels was born in Sweden to a Danish mother and a Norwegian father, which has influenced his view of how government can help drive positive social change.

Nancy Lee, MBA, has more than 24 years of experience in social marketing.  She teaches Social Marketing for MPA and MPH students at the University of Washington, is an international speaker and workshop instructor, and owns a small consulting firm in Seattle, Social Marketing Services, Inc.  She has coauthored 10 books on Social Marketing with Philip Kotler, ones that present this ten step model.  Nancy has a new book scheduled to be published in 2017 by Routledge/Taylor & Francis Group: Policy Making & Social Marketing: Changing Citizen Behaviors.

For over two decades Dr. McKenzie-Mohr has been working to incorporate scientific knowledge on behaviour change into the design and delivery of community programs. He is the founder of community-based social marketing and the author of three books on the topic. One of these books, “Fostering Sustainable Behavior: An Introduction to Community-Based Social Marketing,” has been recommended by Time Magazine and has become requisite reading for those who deliver programs to promote sustainable and healthy behaviour.

Dr. McKenzie-Mohr has worked internationally with a diverse array of governmental and non-governmental agencies, assisting them in identifying the barriers to behaviour change and in developing and evaluating community-based social marketing initiatives to overcome these barriers. His work has been featured in the New York Times and he has been awarded the Canadian Psychological Association’s “Psychologists for Social Responsibility Research and Social Action Award,” and the “Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues Public Advocacy Fellowship.” He is a former Professor of Psychology at St. Thomas University in New Brunswick, Canada where he co-coordinated the Environment and Society program.
